VGA stands for Video Graphic Array or a standard type of connection that is very important on video and image devices such as monitors and projectors. Generally, VGA is in the form of a cable, port, and connector that is used to connect the monitor to the video card.

Furthermore, this VGA cable has a 15-pin connector consisting of 5 pins at the top, 5 in the middle, and 5 at the bottom which will then be attached to the VGA port on the desktop.

Difference between VGA and GPU

After knowing the definition of VGA, you also need to know about GPU which is also often considered the same. So, what are the differences between VGA and GPU?

GPU (Graphic Processing Unit)

In short, GPU stands for Graphic Processing Unit in the form of a chip and is often referred to as a graphics card or VGA chip. The function of this GPU is to process data and convert it into a graphic display.

GPU has various types, including NVIDIA Kepler, NVIDIA Maxwell, AMD Fiji and so on.

VGA (Video Graphic Array)

If GPU is a unit in the form of a chip, VGA is an intermediary to connect the graphics card to the monitor screen. This VGA is in the form of a cable that has red and blue colors, and is generally used on old computers or monitors. Although some call it a graphics card, VGA is actually a type of cable.

VGA and GPU are not the same

From the explanation above, it can be concluded that VGA and GPU are different. Based on their function, VGA is the graphics card, while GPU is a component on VGA. To make it clearer, here is an additional explanation of the differences between VGA and GPU as follows.

  • VGA or GPU are components that are equally important for displaying graphics on a PC.
  • GPUs are always updated every year, starting from their performance and power efficiency.

VGA Function

The function of VGA is to produce and display images on the monitor display. On old computers, this VGA is a very important component. However, for computers with the latest specifications, the function is considered unimportant because it is usually already on the motherboard (onboard VGA card).

However, usually for computer users who need VGA on the motherboard to support several processors to display some displays that do not support. In addition, here are 7 VGA functions including:

  • Used to send and translate output from the computer to the monitor.
  • Displays graphic displays on the monitor screen, by converting digital signals on the computer.
  • Becomes a place to store data from the hard disk.
  • To provide data to the processor to be processed.
  • Functions for playing games, drawing, or drawing design graphics.
  • Draws images with the best quality.
  • Processes graphic data to be displayed on the computer monitor.

Those are the 7 VGA functions, by having a VGA card with a large capacity will make these functions run more optimally. Especially for gamers, using a large capacity VGA will provide a perfect gaming experience without any obstacles, so for gamers having a VGA card with high specifications is a must.
