The first mobile phone in 1946

After the world war ended, the American company Bell Labs developed a mobile phone that was connected to a car. So, users could make voice calls via car. It was the first Mobile Telephone Service (MTS) product in 1946.

The first generation of wireless phones made by Bell Labs weighed around 36 kilograms, very heavy compared to today's smartphones which have an average weight of "only" 150 to 250 grams. The device was quite popular in the US at that time. The popularity of wireless phones made by Bell Labs increased from the 1950s to 1960s. Then, in 1973, Martin Cooper, who was working as a Motorola engineer at that time, succeeded in finding a portable telephone and successfully making voice calls. Due to facing a number of obstacles, Motorola's first mobile phone was only introduced a decade later. The phone was called the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X, had a large body weighing 1 kilogram. The price tag was around 3,900 US dollars (around Rp. 58.2 million). However, because the mobile phone still relied on a pure analog network, the DynaTAC 8000X had a weakness in the signal section. Since the emergence of Motorola, several other technology companies have also competed to do the same thing. Nokia, for example, they started marketing their mobile phone, the Mobira Cityman 900 in 1987. The phone was lighter, weighing 760 grams. One year later, Samsung also introduced its mobile phone in 1988 which had the name SH-100.

The beginning of the GSM era in mobile phones

Entering the 1990s, it can be said to be an era where the mobile phone industry grew very rapidly. In 1991, GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) technology began to appear.

Reporting from Android Authority, the emergence of GSM made the whole world adopt this technology into mobile phones. Some users also started buying SIM cards. Well, in 1994, Nokia released the Nokia 2010, a mobile phone that had a numeric and letter keypad for entering text. Then, in the same year, IBM and Ericsson launched their first mobile phone called Simon. It was the first mobile phone to come with a touch screen. Simon was equipped with quite a lot of features, such as a calendar, notebook, address book, to sending and receiving SMS and email. Not only that, this device was also the first mobile phone to have a personal digital assistant.

Changes in mobile phone design and color

In 1999, Nokia launched a mobile phone with a "banana" model, aka it had a curved body resembling a banana. Meanwhile, Motorola also released its new mobile phone with a vertically folded or clamshell design. In 1998 to early 2000, there was a new breakthrough in the smartphone industry.

One of them was the Siemens S10 which became the first mobile phone to have a color screen, no longer monochrome. The device displayed red, green, blue, and white. In the same period, Blackberry also launched the Blackberry 850 which was equipped with a Qwerty keyboard which was priced at 400 US dollars. In 1999, the Nokia 9110 became the first mobile phone with a WAP browser. This device was at the forefront of its time because it could be used to surf the internet.

The first camera phone

In early 2000, a technology company in Japan succeeded in making the first mobile phone featuring a camera. However, the device was sold exclusively in Japan. Two years later, Sanyo and Sprint launched the first camera phone in the US under the name SCP-5300. At that time, the camera resolution was still small, only 0.3 megapixels. The device came in different color variants and carried a clamshell model. In 2003, Sony introduced a front camera on its device called the Z1010. Then, in 2004, Motorola Razr again created a new trend with a thin body design.

IPhone was born

Entering 2007, Apple began to enter the mobile phone business and launched the iPhone. The device was called a revolutionary phone because it had a fairly wide screen with full touch screen control.

The first generation iPhone could also communicate using the internet. In the same year, Nokia also launched the Nokia N97 which had a 5 MP camera and was equipped with a series of built-in applications. The success of the iPhone indirectly encouraged other vendors to make similar phones. Google, which at that time began developing the Android mobile operating system, developed the first Android phone with HTC, called the HTCG1 in 2008.

The design of phones that began to be uniform

In this era, most mobile phones have identical designs. Phones with touch screen technology that are equipped with only one button at the bottom of the screen.

In the 2010s, several devices also relied on 3G connectivity. In 2013, Sony launched the Xperia Z which can withstand water at a depth of one meter for 30 minutes. In 2014, the HTC One M8 became a camera that has two
